I agree totally on the Europeans/Japanese being able to jump out in front of us again. VW and Audi have great technology with their diesels. Despite their problems, Toyota has everyone whipped with their hybrids. Will we never learn? I would buy a Ford. I really would. But they don't want to sell one to me.

Interesting perspective, thanks. Tax is higher on the bigger, thirstier cars here, this is an attempt to encourage us to drive cars with better fuel efficiency. It has worked to an extent too but in truth the real incentive is the cost of fuel here which is now well over a £1 a litre. This is a problem for America as European and Japanese manufacturers are being forced into producing more fuel efficient cars through consumer demand for them, and when the US eventually sees similar prices for fuel the European/Japanese cars will be ahead of the American ones in production.
Necessity is the mother of all invention.

I have had this same thought many times before. I am amazed whenever I buy something at a premium price point and a retail rep tries to tell me what I'm buying won't last twelve months.

This has happened on flat screens, digital cameras, shoes, digital cards, coffee maker, laptop, and a variety of other smaller items.

If the retailer sells such "crap" to begin with, why would I want to buy it?

I don't think most of the major brands have thought through the amount of damage they are causing through retail 101 failure.

Sure, it is ideal to keep in mind that what we type online is lasting and can be used in ways both positive and negative no matter the situation. However, one can say that a person's opinion and stance shouldn't hold much weight at only 140 characters long. We don't solve problems, or have debates, with only a few words. Obviously this is getting to be a tad verbose, but better to have explain this than have it confused for a small "twit".
